Sassafras Mandala

Sassafras Mandala

2019

35" round fabric wall hanging  SOLD

The Sassafras is a Native Ontario tree that is host to the rare Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly. In this piece, I honour the caterpillar (curled up in the middle), which is so often left out of the equation even though it is every bit as important as the adult butterfly. In fact, we need to realign our definition of beauty to accept 'holy' leaves on our garden plants, because it means that when the larvae are fed, the adult butterflies can grace our gardens.

Caterpillars are also the most important source of protein for growing baby birds. When we respect our insects and give them space in our hearts and gardens, we also help nature fulfill all its crucial cycles.

This piece was chosen for 'Colour with a U', the Canadian quilt exhibition for SAQA (Studio Art Quilts Associates, an international textile organization). It will tour along with 35 other pieces until June 2023.
