Ailanthus #2

Ailanthus #2

2023

36x36" fabric wall hanging (needs only one nail or hook in wall, to hang flat)

Ailanthus altissima is the Latin name for the Tree of Heaven, a beautiful but extremely invasive tree. It was introduced from China to the USA in the late 1700's, and has since become established in many locations, displacing native species in the USA and Canada. It is one of the fastest growing trees in the world, and is able to distribute seeds widely as well as propagating vegetatively. And it is resistant to soil and air pollution. No wonder it's successful wherever it lands.

In the centre of this piece is an example of one of its tiny flowers, where it all begins.

Tree of Heaven is host to an invasive species of insect, the Spotted Lanternfly. This member of the planthopper family is a menace to grapevine crops. Like the tree, it is also beautiful.... nature does not choose favourites. Learn more about it HERE. This little one is in the piece... can you find it?
