Matilija poppies or tree poppies are native to California and Northern Mexico. They are perennials with woody stems and may grow to a height of 8 feet. They have the biggest flower of the poppy family, with large white flowers that have intense yellow centers. Because of this, they are also called the "fried egg plant". I have a commission to make a piece with this species and wish I'd seen one in my many travels to the Southwestern US and Mexico. Loved doing the research and learning about a new fascinating plant. This is a practice piece for the much bigger version.
