The Downy Woodpecker's life cycle is intimately connected with living and dead trees... as sources of food, shelter, and nesting space. Both male and female sit on the eggs and care for the young - the one portrayed here is a male, with the red spot.

If possible, it's better to leave old dead trees up, as they return their resources to the soil, while also providing nourishment and space for all kinds of wild creatures.
