Canadian Wild Cherry is an important small native tree, supporting the larvae of a large number of butterfly and moth species. These in turn provide necessary first foods for bird hatchlings. Native cherry is considered a weed tree in most gardens, but it is in fact a lovely addition to the border, with its early white blooms, striking fall colour, and red fruits (a desirable food source for adult birds!).
The larvae portrayed here (curved along the edge) belong to the Cecropia Moth - one of our most spectacular native silk moths.
