Gallery - Saving Paradise: Trees of the Canadian West 2009

This exhibition was created for the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta, and ran from September 19 to October 31, 2009. It features ten framed textile works depicting tree species of Western Canada. Many of these are also native to Ontario where I live, however their environment and growth patterns differ from the Eastern versions. I took that into consideration with my portrayals.

With each tree hanging, it seemed natural to include a portrait of its seed. Besides being inherently beautiful, tree seeds symbolize both vulnerability and strength. They transmit fresh combinations of genes from previous generations, ensuring natural diversity. Seeds protect within them, sometimes for years, the collective past of a species and are a symbol of hope for the future. It was a great pleasure to create abstract panels inspired by these fascinating seeds, and to mount them next to their parent tree.
